Using Vapi + UI for calls and texts
# support

I'm new to the platform and trying to figure out if what I want is possible. I currently use OpenPhone to send and receive calls and texts manually. However, I’d like to integrate Vapi to automate some tasks while still keeping OpenPhone for my manual operations. I noticed that transferring a number from Twilio might be an option, but I'm wondering if there's a solution that allows me to use a UI for making calls and sending texts manually while also using Vapi with the same number (for example, for automating some outbound calls). Thank you in advance!

Hi there! šŸ‘‹ Based on what I've found in our documentation, it seems like what you're trying to do should be possible, though there are some details to consider: 1. **Using the same number for both automated and manual operations**: Vapi does support using the same phone number for both inbound and outbound calls simultaneously [without needing to port the number](https://discord.com/channels/1211482211119796234/1211483291191083018/1342163412003586058). 2. **Integration with Twilio**: You can integrate Twilio numbers with Vapi via API without fully porting the number, which means you can use Vapi functionalities while the number remains within the Twilio ecosystem [for other operations](https://discord.com/channels/1211482211119796234/1211483291191083018/1334941334368419850). 3. **Import process**: To use your number with Vapi, you would: - Gather your Twilio "Account SID" and "Auth Token" - Navigate to the Vapi Dashboard - Use the "Import" feature in the "Phone Numbers" section - Configure the number in Vapi to handle specific automated tasks While I couldn't find specific information about OpenPhone integration with Vapi, the general approach would likely involve keeping your number managed through Twilio (which OpenPhone might be using) while configuring Vapi to handle certain automated tasks with that same number. I'd recommend starting with the Vapi Dashboard to explore the phone number import options and see if your specific setup with OpenPhone can be accommodated through the Twilio integration path. I don't know about open phone, but I did this months ago with Twilio. Just a note to let you know the essence of what you are trying to do can be done.

Thank you for your response! One workaround I found is importing the phone number from OpenPhone to Vonage, allowing us to use the same number on Vapi for the automated portion of our calls. For manual calls and texts, my coworker can use the Vonage Business Communications app to communicate with our clients. Would that make sense?

Your approach of importing the phone number from OpenPhone to Vonage and then using it with both Vapi (for automation) and Vonage Business Communications app (for manual operations) is indeed a viable solution. 1\. Vapi has built-in support for Vonage phone number integration. You don't need to port or transfer ownership of your number - you can simply connect it to Vapi while keeping it with Vonage. 2\. The import process works by: - Setting up Vonage credentials in Vapi (apiKey, apiSecret) - Importing your Vonage phone number into the Vapi platform - Vapi then configures the number to work with its automated services 3\. When a call comes in to your Vonage number: - For automated calls: Vapi can handle these through its assistant/automation features - For manual calls: The Vonage Business Communications app can still be used This setup allows you to: \- Keep a single phone number for all communications \- Use Vapi's AI automation for specific calls/tasks \- Continue handling manual communications through the Vonage app \- Maintain a professional image with consistent phone identity The technical implementation involves: 1\. First transferring your number from OpenPhone to Vonage 2\. Setting up Vonage credentials in Vapi 3\. Importing the number to Vapi using the dashboard's import feature 4\. Configuring which calls should be automated vs. manual This approach delivers the exact solution you're looking for - using the same number for both automated (Vapi) and manual (Vonage Business Communications app) operations. Would you like me to provide more specific details on any part of this integration process?

I am slightly confused as to which vonage service we need: the APIs, or the 'Business communications'. I tried making an account with the Communications API ('formerly Nexmo'), but but the vapi import fails for the number. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1349060179966169180/1349770575769505803/image.png?ex=67d44f4e&is=67d2fdce&hm=959ebd09251af96d03d91786d7d207fdd203fffef7959bdb8bf2fce1bdd21cb5&

Hello sbelka, could you please provide a loom of the issue you're facing on import so we could dive a little deeper into it?
