DTMF Sounds from Assistant
# support

Hello, I've been testing the assistant and notice that it emits random DTMF sounds when speaking. I am using the voice model from vapi Elliot and I don't see any specific setting that is enabled that would allow it to dial numbers. Note: This is something that I noticed after enabling SIP Trunking with Twilio and calling it directly via phone number. It doesn't happen for Web Call via the Dashboard. Thanks!

Hi there! 👋 I understand you're experiencing random DTMF sounds when your assistant speaks using the vapi Elliot voice model. While I don't have specific information about the Elliot voice model, I can definitely help explain potential causes and troubleshooting steps for this issue. ## Potential causes for the DTMF sounds: 1. **DTMF Tool Configuration**: The DTMF tool might be enabled in your assistant's configuration. This tool allows assistants to generate DTMF tones and is included when
dtmf
is added to the assistant's list of available tools in the configuration. [According to the documentation](https://docs.vapi.ai/tools/default-tools), this is what enables the "Dial Keypad" function. 2. **Known DTMF Function Issues**: The DTMF function in Vapi is [known to be unstable and can have delayed playback time](https://discord.com/channels/1211482211119796234/1211483291191083018/threads/1338841147077820487), which might cause unexpected behavior. 3. **Configuration Issues**: There might be [misconfiguration in your assistant's settings](https://discord.com/channels/1211482211119796234/1211483291191083018/threads/1270786139355090995), such as language settings for the transcriber and voice model, leading to unexpected behavior. 4. **Voice Distortion**: What sounds like DTMF tones might actually be [voice distortion due to network issues or problems with voice synthesis](https://discord.com/channels/1211482211119796234/1211483291191083018/threads/1336377512233664523). 5. **System Limitations**: Vapi [has limitations in handling DTMF tones](https://discord.com/channels/1211482211119796234/1211483291191083018/threads/1342504647520157788), which could lead to unintended behavior. ## Troubleshooting steps:
1. **Check Assistant Configuration**: Review your assistant's configuration to ensure the DTMF tool isn't included in the tools array if you don't need this functionality. The DTMF function is provided when
dtmf
is included in the assistant's list of available tools. 2. **Review Recent Changes**: Check if any recent changes to your configuration might have inadvertently enabled DTMF functionality. 3. **Test on Different Devices**: Try accessing the assistant on different devices to see if the issue is device-specific. 4. **Check Debugging Artifacts**: Review debugging artifacts for more detailed information on what might be causing the issue. 5. **Remove DTMF Tool**: If the DTMF tool is enabled, you can disable it by removing
{"type": "dtmf"}
from your assistant's tools array in the configuration. Would you like me to provide more specific guidance on any of these troubleshooting steps? Hey @killua110, checking if this is resolved/solved for you?
k
Hey Shubham, upon further testing it seems that I am still hearing the DTMF sounds when the assistant speaks. This is with the dial keypad off. Would you know why this occurs and how to resolve?
I've tested different voice models and they seem to have the same issue when calling. I've been calling via Viber if that helps.
s
Hey! To help track down this issue, could you share: - The call ID - When exactly this happened (the timestamp) This would really help us figure out what went wrong!
k
It's strange, when I look back at the call logs and audio, the audio does not have these DTMF sounds and it doesn't happen for all calls, only for some. Would it be better to record the audio and then provide the relevant callid?
Call ID: 653d46ec-7e34-405d-982c-d4d28871a6c5 Attached the recording from my end as the sounds are not in the audio recording on vapi. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1355064327631274042/1357215745435766857/Testcall.m4a?ex=67ef6529&is=67ee13a9&hm=1e63ce02357c03c8b8f799cdbe7210db13a10bfccebfcb9c13356560c9d2d726&

Looking into the call ID shared, I was out of office for a couple of days and couldn't respond back earlier.
Hey, could you share the other call IDs and your local call recordings? I want to understand whose side the issue is. Is it VAPI or Telephony? I'm curious about what's happening.
k
Ok, let me add this
@Shubham Bajaj just to ping up the support thread

Looking into it
Hey, I'm looking into it. Allow me some time to get back to you with a resolution and investigation.
Killua110, the team is working on this. Until then, I recommend using 11Labs voices instead.
k
Thanks for looking into it, keep me updated. One thing to note is that it happens across any voice I believe.
s
Hey, when you mention it happens across any voice Id you use, could you share the other call IDs as well?
