Request for India SIP Trunking + DID Provider Reco...

Hello Vapi AI Team, We’re currently using web calling with Vapi and plan to add both inbound and outbound calling in the near future. For this, we’re implementing SIP trunking with a DID number (presently via Viva Digitally) and our calling scope is India-only. Could you recommend additional vendors who provide SIP trunking with DID numbers in India and are known to work well with Vapi?

Hi Yash Rajbhoj, For SIP trunking with DID numbers in India, aside from Viva Digitally, you might consider using providers like Exotel, Airtel, or Jio. These providers are known to be compatible with Vapi and can offer the necessary support for your calling infrastructure in India. Remember to check compliance with Indian telecommunications regulations such as the requirement for SIP termination via an Indian server. For further integration details, you can refer to the [SIP Trunking Guide](https://docs.vapi.ai/advanced/sip/sip-trunk).

the whole point of connecting with you is to know which partners are reliable and with which partners Vapi meets compliance requirements. We will definitely do our own research and the language in your response does not generate confidence.
Additionally, Jio mentioned they do not work with you citing regulations. So you mentioning them as possible partners is confusing.

@Yash Rajbhoj Connecting numbers in India to VAPI is a bit of a "hassle", due to the Indian TRAI regulation. From a regulatory point of view - the carriers WILL NOT send traffic to VAPI's IP numbers or domain names, as they are located outside of India. Also, they are not allowed to pass their phone numbers to a system they own outside of India - it's illegal, and the fines are amazingly high (we used to work with Exotel, so we're well versed with the TRAI regulations). So, how do you do it? simple, you perform an interconnect via a 3rd Party that has infrastructure in India and is able to provide the connectivity on a localized base. This is one of the things that we enabled multiple VAPI customers to do with Cloudonix. Using Cloudonix, you can leverage phone numbers from Plivo (very economical) then use Cloudonix to connect to VAPI. Based on current customers, latency performance is good (in 95% of the times, Internet can be funky sometimes) - and audio reception is very well fitted for AI Voice usage. If you wish, feel free to DM me and I'll explain in more detail.

Hi Yash Rajbhoj, For integrating SIP Trunking and DID providers for India, please note that there are specific regulations. Currently, Vapi does not support the use of Indian phone numbers with Plivo due to TRAI regulations, which require SIP termination via an Indian server. However, you can consider using a "Bring Your Own" SIP Trunk (BYO SIP Trunk) option, which allows you to integrate any SIP provider suitable for your requirements. You just need to provide the SIP gateway address and necessary authentication details. Make sure to [allowlist the required IP addresses](https://docs.vapi.ai/advanced/sip/sip-trunk) for SIP traffic: - 44.229.228.186/32 - 44.238.177.138/32 Ensure that your provider supports SIP credentials authentication, as IP-based authentication can lead to routing issues unless unique termination URIs or dedicated SIP servers are used.

I'm sorry to say, what you wrote is mildly incorrect. Carriers in India, Plivo as well, will not connect an Indian DID number to a non-Indian IP address. That is a violation of TRAI regulations.

@Nir Simionovich (CEO@Cloudonix) Thanks for the detailed explanation! It’s good to know about the infrastructure solutions you’ve set up for VAPI customers. Could you share more information on the cost structure for using your product, especially in terms of integrating with Cloudonix and leveraging Plivo for phone numbers? We’re specifically looking to make Indian outbound and inbound calls only, so it would be great to understand what the pricing would look like based on that use case and our potential scale. Looking forward to hearing more details!
@Nir Simionovich (CEO@Cloudonix) Also, will we have the option to manage the number buying process ourselves, or is that something handled by your platform?
n
@Yash Rajbhoj Cloudonix is a subscription based service, and as long as you use your own Plivo account, we don't have any minutes charges (as we don't provide call minutes or phone numbers in general). Subscriptions are based on your monthly usage, based upon a "credits" type system. The smallest subscription is $49 US, which will provide you up to 10,000 sessions a month and up to 5 concurrent active calls. There are bigger subscriptions, aimed at enterprise use. The entire system is self-managed through our management portal, and you simply connect your own numbers - from any SIP compatible carrier you can work with.

Hello, Vapi supports multiple SIP trunk configurations, including: 1. Plivo 2. Telnyx 3. Zadarma 4. Custom "BYO" SIP Trunk - this allows integration with any SIP provider of your choice For India-specific DID numbers, while the documentation doesn't specify India-based providers, you can use any SIP provider that: - Provides a SIP gateway address - Offers authentication (either via credentials or IP-based) - Can supply DID numbers for India The key requirement is that your chosen provider must be able to: - Support standard SIP protocols - Allow you to configure the Vapi signaling IPs (44.229.228.186/32 and 44.238.177.138/32)

That is incorrect. Indian TRAI regulations prohibit connecting an Indian phone numebr to a non-indian phone system. They must pass via a local Indian located SBC or equivalent service.
c
Truly sorry for the confusion. Yes, that's correct regarding Indian phone numbers and TRAI regulations. Specifically for Plivo integration with Vapi: Indian phone numbers cannot be used with Plivo on Vapi due to TRAI regulations. These regulations require SIP termination to occur via an Indian server, which Vapi does not currently support.

Thanks for confirming what I wrote above - if required, Cloudonix has Indian based infrastructure (also in the UAE), so India and UAE customers can use Cloudonix's SBC and Programable voice network to connect to VAPI in minutes.
