Bot Answering My Telnyx Calls — Why?

Hi everyone, I’m having an issue with outbound calls and hoping someone can help or share insights. On 25–26 Nov 2025, almost all calls made through Vapi using our Telnyx SIP numbers were answered by a “bot”, but the recipients didn’t actually receive any calls. I tested with my own number — I didn’t get anything, but Vapi logs show the call was “bot-answered” for about 6 minutes, and it charged around $0.40. What’s strange is: Everything worked normally before that It only happens with Telnyx SIP numbers Our Twilio number works fine Has anyone experienced something like this? Could this be a Telnyx routing issue or something on the Vapi side?

Suggestion: Double-check your Telnyx SIP trunk and webhook configurations for any recent changes or misconfigurations, as these are common causes of "bot-answered" calls that never reach the recipient. If you haven't changed anything, try re-saving your SIP trunk settings and ensure your webhook endpoints are reachable. If the issue persists, gather a few affected call IDs and timestamps, then escalate to Vapi support for deeper investigation. This issue is known to be intermittent and sometimes linked to SIP or network instability, so a configuration review is the best first step. This issue is most likely caused by a routing problem on Telnyx’s side, where your calls are being picked up by an automated system before they reach the real recipient. To fix it, collect the call logs or SIP traces for any failed calls and send them to Telnyx support so they can check where the call is being incorrectly routed. At the same time, review your Vapi/Telnyx settings such as codecs, caller-ID, and outbound routing rules to make sure nothing is misconfigured. Since your Twilio number works fine, you can temporarily use Twilio for outgoing calls until Telnyx resolves the issue. This will help you confirm the problem is with Telnyx and not your setup.

Thanks for the reply, Lakshay! Really appreciate your explanation. Yes, I’ve already shared the call IDs with Telnyx support, but so far there’s still no update from them. Unfortunately, today Twilio also started behaving unusually — about half of my calls show as answered by a real user, and the other half show as “answered,” but when I check the call recordings, it’s only background noise. Because of this, I’ve had to temporarily stop all my call lists to avoid unnecessary cost charges.
