Assistant goes silent after tool completes

Hi, my Vapi assistant uses multiple tools (Google Sheets & Calendars) The tool runs successfully and returns busy/free data, but after the tool completes, the assistant often goes silent instead of continuing with the result or next question. Example: it says โ€œThanks for waitingโ€, then stops instead of saying โ€œThat time is availableโ€ or โ€œThat time isnโ€™t availableโ€. Its supposed to say the post tool custom message THEN continue speaking. But it just stops? Iโ€™ve tried prompt rules like โ€œcontinue after every tool callโ€ and shorter completion messages, but it still happens. Is there a setting or recommended tool setup to make the assistant continue speaking after a tool completes?

Yes, Iโ€™ve run into this before with Vapi assistants. Usually the tool executes correctly, but the assistant loses the conversational handoff after the response comes back, so it waits silently instead of continuing naturally. I can help debug the flow and fix the post-tool response behavior so it continues speaking properly after the Google Sheets or Calendar check. @๐•ฌ๐–’๐–

Thx @User , yeah thatโ€™s exactly the issue. The Sheets/Calendar tools run, but after the result comes back the assistant sometimes goes silent instead of continuing the booking conversation. What screenshots/config would be best for me to send first?

You can start by sending the assistant prompt, the tool configuration/settings, and one call log or transcript where the silence happens right after the tool response returns. Thatโ€™ll make it easier to trace whether itโ€™s a prompt flow issue, tool response formatting issue, or model handoff problem after execution. @๐•ฌ๐–’๐–
Can you send this in DM @๐•ฌ๐–’๐– I sent you a friend request

Alright Ive accepted the friend request and forwarded the details on DM @Praise Heritage Abayomi

I have the same problem. What is the fix?

Remove the custom messages and change it back to default (server messaging etc)
The custom messages act static (the last thing your assistant/agent will say) and thats why your assistant stops speaking completely after the custom message

Hi, thanks for reaching out. Could you please share a call ID?
That would help us investigate this further.
